Our Practitioner

Martin's style of practice is a rather unique blend of addressing root and branch, the patient is assessed as a whole in order to maximize treatment efficacy.

As a base, he uses Classical Five-Element Acupuncture (CF-EA) to address the root cause of symptoms. This approach helps a large assortment of complaints beyond just pain, especially mental health and addictions and how a patient relates to their condition as their internal motivation increases.  Martin spends long focused periods of time with each patient to assess and heal all aspects of mind, body and spirit.  For example a stuck hip may also involve a lack of movement elsewhere in a patient's life and a frozen shoulder may also mean the patient is shouldering a large burden in their life.

Martin received certification in this style of acupuncture from the Institute of Classical Five-Element Acupuncture in Santa Monica.  Before embarking on this certification, he received a Master of Science degree in Traditional Oriental Medicine from the San Diego campus of Pacific College of Oriental Medicine.  Martin also has a Diplomat in Oriental Medicine from the National Certification Committee of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.  This Diplomat equates to certification in Acupuncture, Chinese Herbology, Asian Bodywork and Biomedicine.  Martin is Certified / Licensed as an Acupuncturist in both Oregon and New Jersey.

With a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Ramapo College, his prior experience was in Mental Health & Substance Abuse Counseling.  It thrills Martin to help people recapture the laughter and joy in their lives.

Martin also utilizes his training at Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in orthopedic motor point needling to address branch symptoms that people may come in with.  Motor points are non-acupuncture points that are located at the Neuro-Muscular Junction (NMJ) and needling these points results in a muscle twitch as the connection to the Central Nervous System is reset so that muscles that are either atrophied or in spasm can function optimally.  Martin was fortunate enough to be able to study with Matt Callison, who pioneered this field.  Muscle testing before and after demonstrates this shift and often electrical stimulation of the needles further strengthens the improvement.

Martin has augmented his training by becoming certified in Active Release Techniques (ART) to aid his treatment of athletes and people with various old or new injuries.  Currently it is very rare to mix ART with acupuncture; primarily chiropractors use this soft tissue release technique.  Martin has found that it often helps with any restriction that may remain after acupuncture in order to maximize results in less time.  This is basically a vectored acupressure that is done in relation to the full movement of whatever soft tissue structure is being targeted. Martin may use other adjunctive therapies as needed including Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation, gua sha, cupping, assigning exercises, and using Western nutrition along with Chinese Herbology to get the best results in the most patients.

Prior to opening The Center for Classical Five-Element Acupuncture, LLC in Ramsey, New Jersey; Martin was the owner of The Athlete's Point, LLC in Portland, Oregon.  The Athlete's Point, LLC was very successfull under Martin's ownership for two years, and is now under new ownership.
